Gold Medalist Visits the School
Heather Frederiksen, the paralympic swimming champion made a return visit to St Joseph’s Catholic school in Chorley. She proudly showed the children her medals from competing in the Beijing Paralympics. Heather achieved one gold, two silver and one bronze, breaking the world record in the 100 metre backstroke event. Heather presented the school with an Olympic flag signed by Team GB, a mascot and some petals from the closing ceremony.

The children asked her many questions about her experience and gained an insight into the commitment required to be part of team GB. The children gave Heather a congratulations card which the whole school had contributed to and a St Joseph’s Gold medal. We all wish her well in her training towards the 2012 Olympics in London.
Harvest Celebration
Class 3 children at St. Joseph’s Catholic Primary school have spent a wonderful half term learning about Harvest. As part of the new Creative Curriculum this topic has provided opportunities in all areas of the curriculum, including baking bread and biscuits, and making corn dollies.
The children learnt through discovery, art, poetry and song how wheat is grown and made into flour and how fruit and vegetables are gathered in before making the journey to our shops. A trip to the local Aldi store provided an excellent opportunity for studying food and packaging.
The children also took part in a CAFOD assembly and learnt that not everyone can just go the shops for their food, and in many parts of the world it is a struggle to grow and harvest crops. To support those less fortunate, the children sold warm bread rolls at break times last week, to raise £50 for CAFOD. This amount was matched by a very generous parent, to bring the total to an amazing £100. “The children have done really well, and I am very proud of their efforts.”

The highlight of the topic was a celebration for the whole school and bowls of pop corn for each class!
